What does the job involve?

Working from architects drawings to estimate volume of stone required for particular projects.

What kind of person would it suit?

Level headed individual with an eye for detail. Someone with artistic qualities.

What are good subjects to do at school?

Good basic education. Mathematics, geometry, English, technical drawing, art & design would be useful subjects.

What training will I need?

Ideally apprenticeship as a stone mason would form the basis of becoming an estimator.

How much outdoor work is there?

Very little - 20% of work is outdoors.

How much computer work is there?

Majority of work is carried out on a computer.

What's the money like?

As a guide, salaries range from between £30 - £50,000 p.a.

What could it lead?

In the larger Plc's work as an estimating director and in smaller organisations, manager of estimating department.
