At the end of September, the Stone Federation Quarry Forum worked with global design experts, Arup to host their second ‘British Stone & Wine’ event.

Held at Arup’s Manchester office, the event attracted high-level architects, major contractors and specifiers from across Manchester and the surrounding area.

Arup’s geologist and architectural stone expert, Paola Blasi gave a presentation which looked at the 5 stones being showcased, exploring the quarrying methods, case studies and geology while linking the materials to their local wines and cheeses.  The stones profiled were Crosland Hill Yorkstone, Darney Sandstone, Mandale Derbyshire Limestone, Portland Limestone and Scoutmoor Yorkstone.

The presentation was followed by any opportunity for delegates to samples the wines and cheeses and to connect with the material suppliers.  This also proved to be a chance for some excellent networking.

Feedback from both the architects and members has been incredibly positive and plans are already underway to hold a similar event next year.

We would like to thank each of the sponsors (Albion Stone, Hutton Stone, Johnsons Wellfield, Marshalls and Natural Stone Sales) and the team at Arup for their part in making the event such a success.
